I am almost 39 years old now, and just seeing how much I can "max" on the bench has lost some appeal. I recently set a goal of 20x20x20... That is:
20 reps at 225 on the bench
20 reps of 315 on the squats
20 reps of 405 on the deadlifts
I like that approach and have tried variations of it on several occasions.
Its amazing how much you can do when you set a short term goal to do several movements back to back,,,, and then collapse on the floor like a beached whale.
After one such session I was laying on my chest on the floor hyperventilating when I realized that I was honestly not able to move my arms. Can't tell you how weird that felt,, but my face was on the floor, chest heaving and I couldn't move either arm at all. Felt pretty vulnerable for a moment,,,,
