Have you always been in shape? I was a very active kid growing up and that carried over into college and early parenthood. However, I was never tuned into nutrition because I could always eat what I wanted and never gain weight. That all changed drastically when I became pregnant with my second child. I had a high-risk pregnancy and gained a significant amount of weight. I was completely in active for my entire pregnancy and the first two years of my son’s life. I finally had enough and headed back to the gym. I haven’t looked back since, and it’s been over three years.

How did you get started in physique competitions? I began as a personal challenge. I set a goal to be in the best shape of my life by age 30, but once I reached that goal I needed something more. I’d always admired physique and figure competitors, so I naturally gravitated toward the sport. I found after my first competition that it was something I really enjoyed.

Describe your training philosophy: I training 12 months a year with the same intensity and drive during each workout. I never have an off-season and always show up ready to take on new challenges. If I’m not beating a personal squat record, I’m testing out new lifts. I train because it’s what I love to do and can’t imagine myself not walking into the gym every week.

What are your favorite exercises? There are so many. I love compound lifts like full back squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, glute bridges, and front squats. I also enjoy bodyweight exercises like pull ups and pushups. Recently I’ve tested out Olympic lifts and work in cleans and snatches to my weekly routine as much as possible.

What is your diet like in the off-season? I stay dialed in pretty much 365 days a year. It’s not an obsession. I just love healthy foods. I think once I purged the processed junk out of my diet, it just didn’t taste good any longer. I eat at maintenance, and stick with lean meats, eggs, fish, veggies, fruits, nuts, and seeds as the primary basis of my diet.

Describe your diet during contest prep: My diet is pretty much the same as off-season. I just up the intensity of my workouts to burn any extra fat hanging around.

What supplements have worked for you? I am not huge on supplements. I take a good multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin C, digestive enzymes, and calcium. On occasion, I will take BCAAs prior to training.

What advice would you give to aspiring athletes? Stop dwelling in your past and get out there. When I started training 3 years ago, I struggled to do a bodyweight lunge. Now I glide across the gym lunging with 60 lb. dumbbells in my hands. Never under estimate your own potential and realize that though it takes time, you will achieve results you never dreamed possible.

What have you learned about yourself as a physique competitor? I’ve learned that anything is possible through determination and perseverance. I never thought at age 32 I would be in greater shape than I was at age 16. It’s also taught me that living a healthy lifestyle carries success over into other areas of life.

What are your plans for the future? Currently I am co-authoring a female training book with strength and conditioning expert Bret Contreras, which is due out in stores next summer. For the time being my focus is on writing, but I plan to compete again next year once our manuscript is turned in.
