Interview:

Nicholas D. Marts most muscular pose1) Have you always been in shape?

  1. No.  I have a tremendous weight loss story.  I was very unhealthy and on the boarder for morbid obesity at the age of 12.

2) How did you get started in physique competitions?

  1. About 3 years ago I entered Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with the Major of Exercise Science.  At SRU we have an amateur body building competition and I always dreamt of competing in.  The only problem was I previous lost 100+ pounds and needed a tummy tuck.  So I got one to compete.  And coming from a poor family this journey has been very hard.
3) Describe your training philosophy:
  1. High intensity.  I feel that once you progress to the appropriate level your intensity should be high for your body to adapt.  I’ve tried various methods just to keep my body guessing so I guess I can say I do not have a labeled philosophy but high intensity is the only way I run.

4) What are your favorite exercises?

  1. I enjoy dead-lift, squats, dumbbell bench press (incline and flat), lat-pull down and military press.  And for cardio I prefer interval training and a lot of body weight work.

5) What is your diet like in the off season?

  1. My diet stays healthy year round.  I just adjust my volume of consumption.  I basically follow the www.mypyramid.gov guidelines with some added protein because of my training.

6) Describe your diet during contest prep:

  1. It’s the same all year just varying calories.  Two weeks out I began to cut out a lot more calories from dairy mainly which was a big adjustment.  I eventually lowered sodium two days out along with water for the dehydration effect for the contest.  I’ve also only competed in one competition.  I just had my tummy tuck 1 year and 3 months ago.

7) What supplements have worked for you?

  1. The only supplement I have taken for the past year was whey protein with some creatine monohydrate.  I am a college student and my funds are very limited in this department.

8) What advice would you give to aspiring athletes?

  1. First, I would like to say never say you can’t do it.  Find individuals that know what they’re doing and ask questions.  From their responses put together what makes sense and do some research alone.  Work hard and never do anything stupid.  Consistency is key to everything.  It may seem like it takes a lot of time but once it’s said and done you’ll have a HUGE sense of accomplishment.

9) What have you learned about yourself as a physique competitor?

  1. The body can be adapted to more than we can ever think.  If you believe you can do something, you can.  Just create goals to follow through on the way.  From this experience I learned that I can take myself to anywhere I would want to.  If you feel you can’t control yourself in an area, you can your just making excuses.  Set goals and follow through.

10) What are your plans for the future?

  1. A major goal in my life is to be sponsored by a natural body building company that can agree with my methods and allow me to reach people and motivate them to do things the right way.  I am in my final year and undergraduate as an Exercise Science Major and promote all natural body building.
  2. I plan on competing as a body builder and strongman competitor while showing that you don’t need illegal performance enhancing supplements to do great thing.
11)  Below are some before and after shots.  Each one is labeled on when it was:
  1. I was 12 years old here weighing 300 pounds at 5’11”.
  2. Nicholas at 12 years old and 300 lbs

  1. This was me at the age of 21 after dropping about 100-120 pounds.  The loose skin would never go away and I lost it all on my own.  I never had gastric bypass.
